Colonial Caddie Day - Part 1!

Our annual The First Tee of Fort Worth Caddie Days have returned to the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial! On this Monday our young caddies had the great opportunity to meet the PGA Tour professional golfers in person. The caddies provided the yardage while the professionals offered golf and life advice. A few of our caddies even carried the bag while many others made putts on the green. What a great experience for all of our young golfers! Also 2 of our The First Tee students, Jessica Liptak and Josh Hinojosa, are serving as On Course Reporters with full media access throughout the week - they will be posting stories on our Facebook page and providing feedback on their experiences. San Antonio The First Tee Network Meeting

In March The First Tee held its annual Network Meeting with the theme of "Impact, Influence, Inspire" and one of the featured speakers was our own Coach Carlos Batista and his family. Carlos shared his family's moving and emotional story of coming to the mainland from Puerto Rico and how The First Tee of Fort Worth became their new home. A very short clip from the beginning of Carlos' presentation is linked below. We hope to feature Carlos's story in our own The First Tee of Fort Worth video later this year so stay tuned.

GLADNEY CUP!

The annual Gladney Cup will be held May 2 at The Colonial Country Club. This very prestigous event raises funds for the local Edna Gladney Home. All golfers walk for the event and are assigned caddies. This year the Gladney Cup has asked The First Tee of Fort Worth to help provide student caddies who would carry their assigned golfer's bag for the entire 18 holes. On April 26 at 6:00-7:00pm at Rockwood Golf Course and Saturday April 30 at 1:00pm at Rockwood we will hold a caddie training day. Golf Marathon Is Coming!!

The annual The First Tee of Fort Worth Golf Marathon Fundraiser is almost here again! On Monday May 2 our brave marathoners will tee off at first light at Rockwood Golf Course and play as many holes as possible throughout the day. Each marathoner will have pledges made for as many holes as they can manage. This fun event raises needed funds for The First Tee and provides quite a few laughs. The golf is not always great but it is fast!! Please check The First Tee of Fort Worth website to pledge your support or to sign up to play and help raise money. United Community Center Charity Golf Tournament

On Monday March 26 the United Community Centers had their charity golf event at Mira Vista Country Club. United Community Center Board Member Dr. Gary Strong is also a member of The First Tee of Fort Worth Board and three groups from The First Tee were invited to play in the event by sponsors Frank and Louise Carvey. Four student members of The First Tee participated and a framed picture was presented to Kevin Long. The students who participated were: Jessica Liptak, Alexandra Batista, Joshua Hinojosa, and Nicholas Narcisse. The First Tee Fort Worth Board Members participating were Debbie Driskell, Gail Friedman, Hector Hinojosa, Raymond Darrow, Fred Reynolds, Dr. Gary Strong (Tournament Chair) and Kevin Long. The First Tee Fort Worth instructors participating included Phil Renteria, and Glenn Hendrich; The First Tee Volunteers included Terry Talley and Melinda Edwards. What a great day of golf and much money was raised. These events help strengthen the parternship between The First Tee of Fort Worth and United Community Centers which provide great service opportunities in our community.

The First Tee Network Meeting Launches New Curriculum and New Honorary Chair!

At the The First Tee Network meeting in San Antonio this past weekend, more than 600 chapter executive directors, program directors, coaches and volunteer board members gathered as they do each bienneium. The meeting proved to be very busy and productive. The First Tee announced that former President George W. Bush has agreed to serve as the new honorary chairman of the program, replacing his father, former President George H.W. Bush, who will move into an emeritus honorary chair role. Joe Louis Barrow, Jr., chief executive officer of The First Tee, said, "On behalf of The First Tee network, I welcome President George W. Bush and thank him for his interest and engagement in this organization. His father has had an enormous impact on our efforts, and we look forward to continuing our work with their guidance and leadership."

In addition, The First Tee has announced -- in conjunction with Annika Sorenstam and her ANNIKA Foundation as well as the Florida Hospital for Children -- the introduction of a new curriculum framework. The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits provide a platform for the nine pillars of energy, play, safety, vision, mind, family, friends, school and community. "The First Tee has always shared my passion for building awareness around the healthy aspects of golf," said Annika. "The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits are a smart and systematic approach to reach children about health and fitness, and educate them on healthy life skills that they can integrate into their lives, even outside of golf."

The network meeting also focused on a new five year plan that seeks to grow The First Tee around the nation. The goal is to reach more than 8 million youth through at least 1,500 chapters by 2015, as well as increase elementary school participation to more than 8,000 . The organization currently reaches 4.7 million young people. Increased attention will also focus upon including more females and teenagers in the program while also increasing diversity.

Giving Thanks Tournament

Over 100 players participated in this year's Giving Thanks Tournament and they helped to fill a truck with donations for the Northside Inter-Church Agency. Donations are still be accepted and you can learn more by going to http://www.nicaagency.org/. Thanks to all who played and/or volunteered as we greatly appreciate your service to the community.

The Team with the lowest score was Jason Rocha, Cain Rocha, Jerry Smiley and Kim Rocha with a 28 for 9 holes. Since they only had one junior player the winning cup went to the following team

The First Tee of Fort Worth HONORED!

The First Tee of Fort Worth is the #1 Chapter in terms of retention, progression and completion by students! Congratulations!!! The factors that contributed to this success are: great staff, great volunteers, and wonderful community partners that allow our chapter to run more programs/events at once than most chapters. Our instructors have really studied and know the curriculum which helps keep the kids involved and progressing through the program while also attracting new kids. CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who has helped make The First Tee of Fort Worth such a success!

The First Tee of Fort Worth is also in the Top 5 in the number of coaches in the Lifeskills National Training Program! We have 2 Recognized First Tee Coaches: Jason Rocha and Phil Renteria. Glenn Hendrich has completed all the training and is just in the process of completing the final paperwork. This means that these coaches have completed all 3 phases of The First Tee training so that they can train other volunteers and coaching. Six additional coaches are in some point of the program including our Executive Director Kevin Long! This is a Great Statistic for our chapter!

Birdies for Charity Update

The Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial completed its accounting of its portion of the PGA's Birdies for Charity program. A total of $4 million dollars was donated in the program and The First Tee of Fort Worth receiving $6,000 in matching funds. With the matching funds, The First Tee raised over $10,000 of new donations for the program.

Jessica Liptak Headed to Disney World Leadership Forum!

Jessica Liptak ,who was chosen to attend the National Life Skills Academy earlier this year, has now been selected to participate in the Toro Future Leaders Forum at Disney World in Florida in November. This forum helps students broaden their leadership skills, prepare for college and explore career disciplines within the game of golf. The application process included a 350-word essay on her goals, career aspirations and post-high school plans; involvement in school and community activities; and a letter of recommendation from school faculty and The First Tee Chapter Executive Director. Only 50 students from across the country are chosen to participate! Jessica will participate in Disney's “Leadership Excellence: The Inside Track" program that teaches the leadership strategies, techniques and behaviors of successful Walt Disney World executives. Additionally, the Forum connects students with industry leaders to learn about careers in tournament operations, golf course management, broadcast media, marketing and hospitality. The program includes presentations from Disney Institute, Toro, PGA of America, The Golf Channel, Marriott Golf and The Children's Miracle Network, along with a behind-the-scenes look at a PGA TOUR golf event.

Jessica has had an inspiring year and she is The First Tee of Fort Worth nominee for the National Participant of the Year Award which will be named in February.

Chapter Nominees for Annual National Awards

The First Tee of Fort Worth has selected three of our volunteers as nominees for the national Shell Oil George W. Bush Volunteer of the Year Award that will be handed out at the National Meeting early in 2011.

Carlos Batista: Carlos is the parent of one of our outstanding student participants, Alexandra Batista. Carlos is a Physical Education teacher at W.J. Turner Elementary in the FWISD and has been instrumental in helping begin the National School Program in the FWISD. Turner Elementary will be the first school to launch the program this fall. Carlos moved to Fort Worth from Puerto Rico as he wanted to provide more opportunities for his daughter. They joined The First Tee and it has been a center point of their lives. Alexandra is an great competitive golfer at 12 years of age. Carlos has worked hard in The First Tee classes, camps and the NSP.

Lynn Narcisse: “Coach” Lynn as he is known was first involved in The First Tee in New Orleans and moved with his family to Fort Worth after Hurricane Katrina. He and his daughter Janine and son Nicholas soon became active in The First Tee of Fort Worth. Lynn is one of our “go to” guys who attends every event for which volunteers are needed from classes to the pro-am and he provides hours of great video coverage.

Carlos Guzman: Carlos is a part-time volunteer, part-time The First Tee staff member. He does a fantastic job of networking and marketing for The First Tee in the Fort Worth community. He has secured many donations and works heavily with the Hispanic Community through such organizations as the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Pan-American Golf Association. Carlos is a wonderful representative of The First Tee and his great wit and enthusiasm help market our program. He also has the most unique golf swing you will ever see!

Our first chapter nominee for the Jack W. Stephens Leadership Award is our Board Chair Janet Hearld. Janet has served as the chair since its inception in 2003 and she has guided The First Tee of Fort Worth with inspiration and vision! She has helped us establish great relationship with the City of Fort Worth and led the Board through dynamic change and growth. She has worked tirelessly for The First Tee and often behind-the-scenes, and she will soon lead us in developing our new strategic plan. Janet is active in many organizations including the TCU Alumni Association, the Junior League and she served as the first female Board President of Shady Oaks Country Club.

And our second nominee is Fred Reynolds a long-time successful amateur golfer who grew up in Fort Worth and has a great belief in The First Tee program and an enthusiasm for what it means to kids. He serves as Chair of our Capital Campaign Committee and has successfully guided our capital campaign. Fred is very active in the UNT Health Science Center and many philanthropic organizations, especially the Ben Hogan Foundation of which he is a founding patron.

National School Program

The First Tee National School Program (NSP) has started in the Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) and Birdville Independent School District (BISD). The National School Program helps to establish a lifelong interest in golf by providing golf curriculum within physical education classes as well as promoting personal character development. The First Tee of Fort Worth has secured funding for a pilot program that began this fall at four FWISD schools and sixteen BISD schools. The First Tee of Fort worth has taken the leadership to secure funding for these schools and we hope to have funding for all 81 FWISD schools and 21 Birdville schools as well as 2 additional school districts. A $3000 gift will fund the NSP in four schools in the district which breaks down to a cost of about $1 per student. An additional $3000 will help fund the work of transitioning students into involvement in The First Tee program.

Henry House Foundation / Ben Hogan Foundation Event

Thanks to the Henry House Foundation and Ben Hogan Foundation for their support in running the White Hot Nights Gala at Mira Vista CC and Ben Hogan Invitational at Shady Oaks Country Club. The organizations partnered together for the second year to raise money for The First Tee of Fort Worth's Ben Hogan Learning Center at Rockwood Golf Course. Highlights of the evening were the 3 Dan Dunn original paintings, which were auctioned off for more than $58,000 combined, and singer/songwriter Pat Green's auction of his guitar and a private in-home concert for $31,000!!

The golf invitational was a great event and the amateurs and professionals competed for the "Hogan Hands" trophy. The pro competition featured J.J. Henry and 11 other local PGA Tour professionals in a unique best ball format. Cain Rocha and Sara Posey spoke about The First Tee at the Gala and 12 of our students served as walking scorers for the pro competition.

Pro-Am Report

A full field of 120 players and local golf professionals competed in the 5th Annual Pro-Am on October 8th. Although no one won the 15,000 hole in one prize, we did raise over $9,000 for our program. We thank all of the players, sponsors, in-kind donors. Special thanks to our presenting sponsors - Yamaha Golf Cars and Fred Reynolds and Associates. We are also very appreciative of Lone Star Charity Auctions for running our silent auction and long drive hole. Special thanks as well to Carol and Adam Siegel and Unifirst for providing wonderful food!! Thanks to the City of Fort Worth Golf Division for their fantastic partnership and support of this event.

Jamie Youree competes at Pebble Beach

Jamie Youree was one of 78 participants from around the country to compete in The First Tee Open at Pebble Beach on Labor Day weekend. Participants, who are paired with a Champions Tour player, are selected based on their involvement with The First Tee, recommendations from chapter staff and community members, submission of essay questions, and a personal interview. Jamie was paired with Bruce Lietzke for the weekend and had a marvelous time and played very well! Congratulations to Jamie for representing our chapter and The First Tee in excellent fashion!

Cain Rocha and Sara Posey compete at LPGA Event in Arkansas

Prior to heading to Arkansas, Cain and Sarah were given a great send-off by the local Walmart store # on August 28. Cain and Sarah putting on a putting display and the store provided a check for $5000 to The First Tee.

In September Sara Posey and Cain Rocha were selected to participate in the LPGA P&G NW Arkansas Classic sponsored by WalMart in Rogers, Arkansas in September. Sara was to play in the Pro-Am and Cain was selected to play with our local hometown hero, Angela Stanford, and Na Yeon Choi for 2 days of the event! Unfortunately, rain washed out the Pro-Am and Sara did not get to play, but she had a wonderful time at the tournament events and was able to mingle with the LPGA stars for a few days! Cain played wonderfully and placed 3rd in his bracket and even was featured on Golf Channel for a brief moment!

What a Busy and Exciting Summer!

The First Tee of Fort Worth had a full and exciting summer of events so let us catch you up on all our happenings!

The First Tee Club Championship was held in August at different venues and we had many winners in each age division who received personalized Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial flags. In July The First Tee of Fort Worth golfers travelled to Dallas to compete in a Ryder Cup format against The First Tee of Dallas chapter. Our golfers brought home the coveted Golden Cowboy Boot trophy! A rematch will be held in early spring.

We also ran 9 weeks of summer camps with an average enrollment of 50 students per week! The intensive week-long format helps improve golf skills and allows The First Tee instructors to provide more personalized instruction. Almost 50% of the golfers in the summer camps are new to The First Tee and most of these will matriculate into the Life Skills Program.

The Fort Worth City Junior Golf Championships in July featured many golfers from The First Tee as part of the record field. At least 50 girls and 75 boys from The First Tee participated in all age groups. This free tournament which is managed by Wendell Conditt allows the golfers to play a variety of great Fort Worth golf venues over the days of the tournament including Colonial CC, Shady Oaks, CC, Mira Vista CC and Woodcrest. This long standing tournament will celebrate its 75th anniversary next year and has a long list of great past champions including Lindy Miller, Mark Brooks, Hunter Haas and Angela Stanford. Youth Clinic and Wednesday Caddie Day at Colonial

Over 1000 children attended the Colonial Invitational Youth Clinic on Monday afternoon May 24. This included students from Charles Nash Elementary school in Fort Worth that is part of the National School Program pilot program that we brought you earlier on this blog. Colonial CC provided the funding for buses to transport the students to and from the course. Many families attended the clinic and Fed-Ex Fore Ever announcement done by Hank Haney. RadioDisney provided a free concert. So thanks to Colonial CC, Nike Golf, Radio Disney and Crowne Plaza for providing such a great event!

The Wednesday Caddie Day at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial was also a big hit! Many of the players allowed the students to putt out for them on the 13th green. The Henry House Foundation and golfer J.J. Henry also provided the Henry House hideway along the 10th tee and fairway; this skybox was a cool place for the kids and their families at the tournament to get out of the heat and enjoy a free lunch. The neighboring skybox funded by GolfConnectionUSA also opened their doors in order to accomodate more families so we really had access to two suites! Thanks to Bryan Lank and Pam Wood for providing this extra space as well as drinks and snacks.

Special Memory from Caddie Day

Wednesday Caddie Day at the Colonial also brought a special memory for one of The First Tee students. Last year at Caddie Day (2009), Catherine Pitre was having a bad day; she had recently lost her beloved grandparents and the trip to Colonial had triggered some tough memories. She missed their love and guidance in her everyday life and found the day to just be overwhelming. So she and her parents had walked over to the driving range as a break to see who they might be able to watch. As they approached the range, V.J. Singh was the only golfer out hitting balls. He turned and noticed Catherine's distress and immediately pulled off the headcover from his 3 wood, signed it and handed it to her!

This small act of unsolicitied kindness on the part of V.J. deeply touched Catherine who felt in part this was a sign from her grandparents reaching out to help her get through the day. Catherine's spirits were greatly lifted and she knew that her grandparents were still part of her life and reaching out in new ways to provide comfort. She wrote a touching letter to VJ to thank him for his kindness and wanted to tell him in person.

This year (2010) the Colonial folks and The First Tee provided VJ a copy of the letter and paired her with him on Caddie Day. She had a chance to thank him personally and to return the kindness he had originally shown and let him know how much his simple act had made such a difference in her life. So remember that every day you can touch someone's life in a positive way -- even without realizing it!

Hank Haney Golf Academy

Emily Matthews, Jessica Liptak and Cain Rocha attended the Hank Haney International Golf Academy in Hilton Head, South Carolina June1-5! They worked on all aspects of their game and learned to be life skill leaders. The mental approach to the game and preparations were also stressed. The students all received a great wealth of information and they all agreed that: Hank Haney himself spent time at the camp and worked inviduallly with each student!

you must work hard and the work must be important to you;
sometimes you have to get worse in order to improve;
and how valuable The First Tee curriculum has been to them!.

They realized that much of what they are taught in The First Tee helps to develop the mental side of their game and the work they did at the Haney Academy was very similar to The First Tee Life Skills curriculum. This curriculum is very valuable in helping them move forward. The Academy instructors all commented that The First Tee students are far more prepared for the demands of the game, setting goals and dealing with adversity than the average junior golfer!

The First Tee FedEx Forever Followup

The First Tee of Fort Worth had a great day on Saturday May 22 with more than 150 volunteers helping to bring "green" to Rockwood Golf Course as part of the Audobon International/FedExCup Fore!Ever Green program. Over 2000 plants found a new home and our students learned so much about creating a sustainable golf course. The First Tee is now working with the City of Fort Worth on building a sustainability program and The First Tee national office is developing a Green Curriculum and The First Tee of Fort Worth will be the test for this curriculum beginning in the fall. This is another part of the great values that The First Tee helps teach our young people!

Great Day!

What a great day this has been for The First Tee of Fort Worth! Our young golfers have really enjoyed this experience -- everyone of them has come off the green with a big smile. This has been a fabulous opportunity for them to meet professional golfers and to learn about the game. They have shown great maturity and all of the core values that The First Tee tries to impart. So great going young golfers!

Now many of them are going to attend the free kids clinic here at Colonial and then a free concert. Your friendly blogger will be signing off now and maybe watch a few holes before heading to the golf course herself to at least hit some balls on range if not work in a quick round (depends on traffic). Last groups

Our last few groups are now up. The First Tee's Ben Vina is accompnaying pro Cliff Kresge to the green carrying his bag. Great out from the sandtrap for one of the amateurs. Cliff and Ben are carefully reading the green to line up the putt which is about a 20 footer.

The last group has arrived and Luke Vina will be caddying for one of the young guns on the PGA Tour Ryuji Imada. What a fun day this has been. These last groups of amateur golfers are looking a little tired as the heat and humidity (and the golf course) begins to take a toll.

Winds picking up

Well the good ol' Texas winds have started picking up and creating problems for the tee shots. Pro Michael Connell put his shot just off the edge of the green as Tanner Smith watched. Tanner picks out the right wedge for the shot and then hands Michael his putter. Alright the lady amateur in this group just made birdie from about 12 feet! Michael stays on the green a bit to map out possible hole placements for the tournament so Tanner gets some further insights.

Pro Alex Prugh is ready to tee it up and Josh Vina watches intently. Alex and Josh lind up the putt; it hit the rim of the cup and rolled about six inches by. May have been just a touch too much speed. Good job Josh.

Now Will Vina is watching his pro Jason Bohn on the tee and its a nice shot. One of the amateurs hit a nice shot out of the bunker -- downhill lie and scary as water on other side. Will is giving some good advice to Jason on reading the putt and they have it all lined up. Oh just missed by a little.

Jeff Maggert and next groups

Jeff Maggert's group must be playing a little slow as they are still not to the tee box and the previous group has been gone for about 5 minutes; I'm sure its those amateurs slowing play :) Wow they are still on 12th green -- good thing not in tournament or would be flagged for slow play. The First Tee's Callie Arnold is ready to go when they arrive. And they finally made it :) Jeff's on the green. LOL not sure the amateurs playing with Jeff understand how to get to their tee box; lots of standing around after he hit instead of moving to the tee box from which they will hit and no one seems to know who should tee off first! Of course for Callie this means more time to spend talking and learning from her tour pro; they talk the entire walk from the tee to green. Alright Jeff has Callie finish off with the par putt from about 2 feet!!!

Now Trey Turner is ready to help our own pro Mark Brooks of Fort Worth! Mark just hit a great tee shot to within abotu 12 feet as the winds have picked up. Trey is intently watching Mark line up his putt; it just missed left by about six inches.

Now on the tee is ro Matt Jones who will be accompanied by The First Tee's Cameron Carr. Matt let Cameron take a swing with one of his clubs on the tee box and then put his own tee shot slightly off the back of the green. Oh my one of the amateurs in this group has on BRIGHT ORANGE pants but he hit it in the water :) Oh he hit a second one and it hit off the bank and into the water too LOL. Cameron is carrying the bag for Matt as they walk and talk to the green. Only one other amateur made the green and the rest are taking a break in the shade. Matt lets Cameron putt out on the green.

John Daly up now!

Whoops! John became the first pro to put his tee shot into the water on 13. Gina and Sophia Montez will help him recover as they walk to the green. I know they are smiling at John's pretty loud pants :)John didn't take a drop here just let the amateurs play it out.

Well all of the morning clouds have burned off and it is a bright sunny, warm day with still a pretty good breeze (your friendly blogger here is in the shade though!). The next group is a little slow getting to the tee box, but Aryan Wilson is patiently waiting to greet pro Michael Sim. The young golfers are really enjoying working with the pros and watching the golf from the grandstands here before and after they caddie on the hole. Michael did pretty well and Aryan helped him read the putt.

Pro Joe Oglivie has some cool salmon colored pants and looks like he belongs in the tropics. Jacqueline Davilla is happy to carry his putter for him after a tee shot onto the green. (Of course John Daly is due by a little later so we wil probably see some really wild pants then. ) Jacqueline and Joe discussed the putt to find the line and he left is just a few inches right of the cup.

Our own Alex Henderson is now ready to help out pro John Mallinger. Alex is giving some key instructions on reading this putt and John is explaining about speed. I think they have a good idea of what they are going to do here. Oh just a little short!

Blake Adams who finished in 2nd at yesterday's Byron Nelson in Irving just hit his tee shot a short way off the green in front of the bunker so he will have an interesting little pitch shot down hill. The First Tee's Grant Brown will help him with the read though :) Blake putted from the fringe a little beyond the hole and let Grant putt out for a par!

Erica Ryals is here to talk with me about her experience. She had it was fun; she was with the Amateur Champion invited to play and she liked that he was young and has a chance to a pro like she wants to do. He gave her a golf ball signed. This was her first year but she loved it. She learned to not underestimated your shot! What a good golfer. She has been in The First Tee program for four years.

The First Tee's Joshua Mojica is now helping pro Jerod Turner on the tee as he tries to decide on which club to use with the tricky winds. Must have worked as Jerod put his shot within 8 feet of the pin. Wow this whole group has put it on the green and close to the pin. Joshua carried the bag from the tee and now will help read the putt. Joshua just holed out the putt for birdie!! Way to go Joshua

Tour Pro/Amateur Champion Byeong-Hun An just hit to the back left of the green with help from Erica Ryals of The First Tee. The wind is being a little tricky on the 13th hole today as it is sometimes gusting pretty heavily and then almost calm at other times. Erica carried the bag from the tee to the green -- good for her! Whoops one of the amateurs just hit his sand shot across he green into the water -- tough shot.

Pro Martin Flores with Jonathan Espinosa just put it over the back of the green -- safe shot. So far no pros have been in the water unlike many of the amateurs ;)

Matt Weibring missed the green but Abby Lueck provided support as he hit out of the sand bunker. The whole group had trouble finding the green but Matt is providing some grand sand instruction :) One lady had some trouble getting of the sand. Now Abby gets to putt! Oh man she left it just inches short but great try.

Daniel and Sue Oh are now helping Michael Bradley as he prepares to hit. They must have helped as he hit a nice shot onto the green. Well this group has all hit the green! Yes this makes it move a little quicker. Michael Bradley is enjoying talking with the students and helping them stay cool in the sun that has now come out in full force as the morning clouds burn off.

Well our first group is now on the tee. The First Tee student Christian Offi will be helping PGA Tour Pro Ben Crane. The students meet the pros, have their picture taken, and receive signed Colonial flag stick flags. Ben Crane just hit his tee shot into the sand trap. The first amateur in on the green! and the second amateur is on the far right of the green. The last two amateurs are in the water! They are now walking around to the green. Crane made a really nice hit out of the sand! Crane generously signed a ball and cap. And on to the next hole.

Our second group will have Alexis and Kristin Ladd-Flores with tour pro Chris Stroud. He just hit to within 8 feet of the flag! Great shot.

Hank Haney Partners with The First Tee and Fort Worth Members Invited to Play

The First Tee and the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy (Hank Haney IJGA) have formed a partnership in which each organization's programs and practices will be shared to further promote youth development through the game of golf. Jessica Liptak, Emily Matthews and Cain Rocha will travel to Hilton Head, South Carolina from June 1st - 5th to participate in a unique Life Skills and instructional event! These 3 members of our program were among the 29 students selected from The First Tee chapters from across the country!

"We are very excited to partner with The First Tee and implement their Life Skills Education programs into our daily curriculum at Hank Haney IJGA. Each year, their organization has a positive effect on thousands of junior golfers around the world and we are excited to elevate their golf instruction needs," said Hank Haney, Director of Instruction for Hank Haney IJGA and instructor of the #1 player in the world. "I look forward to working with the participants of The First Tee during their visit to Hilton Head Island in June."

The following initial measures will occur as a result of the partnership:

The First Tee will include Hank Haney IJGA-certified instructors in The First Tee coach training sessions for further exposure to the Life Skills Experience curriculum; and The First Tee will host clinics specifically for Hank Haney IJGA students.
Select staff and participants of The First Tee will take part in a dedicated academy experience June 1-5 at Hank Haney IJGA on Hilton Head Island, S.C.
From the academy experience in June moving forward, The First Tee participants will be eligible for scholarships and reduced rate opportunities at Hank Haney IJGA.
Haney will join The First Tee PLAYer Advanced Academy in Monterey, Calif. July 27-August 3, offering instruction to The First Tee coaches as well as a participant clinic.
Hank Haney IJGA also will work with The First Tee Coaches through clinics in an effort to introduce aspects of Haney's teachings into The First Tee coach training and participant programs.

JJ Henry Gives Generously to The First Tee

Local PGA Tour Pro and TCU Alumnus, J.J. Henry, presented The First Tee of Fort Worth with a check for $100,000 at the Chamber of Commerce Colonial Crowne Plaza Kick-Off luncheon on Tuesday, May 18!

The donation is to help support the construction of the Ben Hogan Learning Center at Fort Worth's Rockwood Golf Course. The donation is the first installment of a three year partnership on behalf of Henry's foundation, Henry House, to help raise funds for the Ben Hogan Center.

Fedex Audobon Day at Rockwood!

On Saturday May 22, The First Tee of Fort Worth volunteers worked hard to beautify Rockwood Golf Course along the Trinity River. Over 150 student and adult volunteers spread out around the course directed by Fedex, City of Fort Worth and Audubon International volunteers and staff as part of the FedExCup® Fore!Ever sustainability program.

They planted trees, natural grasses, shrubs and flowers on the course and around the clubhouse. They also learned key elements of creating sustainable golf courses. Fort Worth notables including Mayor Mike Moncrief and Councilman Sal Espino stopped by to lend a helping hand as well. They helped plant trees and encouraged the young people as they worked.

The PGA tour folks even conducted interviews with the mayor and our own Executive Director Kevin Long along the course. Fort Worth and Rockwood Golf Course are one of only six courses chosen this year as part of the Fedex Audobon Program and the video will be displayed during the Crowne Plaza Colonial Invitational Tournament in the coming week.

FedEx Teams Up With PGA TOUR, Audubon International and The First Tee for FedExCup® Fore!Ever Campaign, an Eco-Friendly Golf Education and Community Grant Program

On Saturday, May 22, Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief and more than 100 golfers from The First Tee of Fort Worth will work to make environmental improvements to Rockwood Golf Course in Fort Worth with help from FedEx volunteers and Audubon International. The course improvement is part of the FedExCup® Fore!Ever sustainability program that aims to teach local participants of The First Tee about sustainable golf practices while facilitating hands-on eco-friendly course improvements in communities that host PGA TOUR FedExCup® tournaments. The event is being held in conjunction with the PGA TOUR leading up to the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial Golf Club, which will take place May 24-30, 2010.

During the 2010 PGA TOUR season, The FedExCup® Fore!Ever campaign is providing environmental improvement grants to six golf courses used by The First Tee. FedEx is also working with Audubon International to create a “Green Golfer” curriculum that will teach young golfers nationwide about sustainable golf. Through Audubon International and The First Tee, FedEx and the PGA TOUR are identifying and facilitating improvements to those six golf courses across the country. Course improvement events will take place in PGA TOUR tournament communities and Rockwood Golf Course in Fort Worth is one of the six chosen courses!

“The First Tee’s mission is to impact the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf,” said The First Tee Executive Director Kelly Martin. “The FedExCup Fore!Ever program will help teach our young golfers about the importance of respecting and restoring the earth’s natural greenscape. It is such a valuable lesson.”

In addition to providing grants for sustainability-focused course improvements and youth relevant curriculum, the FedExCup® Fore!Ever campaign provides golfers of all ages with practical suggestions to make their game more eco-friendly, including:

• Re-green your game: Practice good etiquette, like repairing ball marks and divots. This process helps heal the grass much faster and reduces the chance of insects, weeds or diseases affecting the grass in that area. Healthy grass requires fewer chemicals, less water and less work to maintain, which is for the good of the game and the environment.

• Respect the wildlife: Golf is a shared experience with nature. You need to respect wildlife habitat on the course and recognize the link between golf and nature. So before stepping onto the green, examine course maps to identify areas that may be home to wildlife and should be left undisturbed during the game.

• Lead by example: Sustainability starts at home. Trade in plastic water bottles for reusable and refillable bottles that can be used and washed time and time again. Drinking something other than water? Make it a point to recycle empty cans and bottles at the end of your round.

National School Program and FWISD

On April 30th The First Tee Fort Worth participated in Career Day with the Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) as a way to promote the National School Program of The First Tee. The First Tee coaches and volunteers demonstrated the game of golf for the students and discussed how the golf club is the key to unlocking opportunity.

Charles Nash Elementary was one of four schools that The First Tee Fort Worth will provide the resources to fund on campus programs which utilize the physical education curriculums. The First Tee provides traning for the curriculum and the equipment to institute the program. The National School Program is a fun, safe, effective means to introduce golf and the Nine Core values of The First Tee. Fort Worth currently has established a program with four Fort Worth ISD schools and will also be implementing the NSP in Birdville and Eagle Mountain/Saginaw ISDs.

Fort Worth also hosted two national leaders of The First Tee NSP. Benna Cawthorn, who is Director of Education and Operations, and Guy Garbarino, who is the Director of Outreach, were in town all week to meek with FWISD officials and numerous organizations and individuals locally who are interested in supporting and supplying programs for NSP. Their visit was a great opportunity to hear about the NSP as well as to begin conversations on developing transition programs to help the school students have more invovlment in The First Tee program and if interested to access The First Tee Life Skills curriculum.

We are proud to announce that The First Tee of Fort Worth has received a grant to assist in the sustainability of Rockwood Municipal Golf Course. FedEx has launched the FedExCup® Fore!Ever campaign in conjunction with the PGA Tour, Audobon International and The First Tee to commit to making the game of golf more sustainable. The FedExCup® Fore!Ever campaign has selected six public golf courses used by The First Tee to receive environmental improvement grants. This is a great honor and responsibility.

On Saturday, May 22nd, we will need up to 150 student volunteers to participate in the volunteer course work at Rockwood. Students who have classes on Saturday can volunteer during their normal class session as classes have been postponed for that day. We will also need a few adult volunteers for the event. Volunteer applications for this event will be available on The First Tee of Fort Worth website at http://www.thefirstteeftworth.org/. This event will have extensive media coverage with a press conference held during the Colonial golf tournament week.

Wow! We NETTED over $62,000 from our second annual Golf Marathon! Thanks to all of our wonderful sponsors, super volunteers and the 32 1/2 golfers who made this all possible. Our golfers played over 3,500 holes of golf for the day. Fred Reynolds brought in the most bucks at over $7,000!

This year's marathon was really a great success. In addition to increasing our amount raised over last year from $36,000 to $62,000+ we also increased the number of individual donors to over 400! And over 1/2 of these were new donors to The First Tee of Fort Worth.

The golfers plug on this afternoon. Our marathoners are hanging in there although play has slowed a little as the afternoon moves forward. Mike Maday continues to run from cart to green but most of the golfers are clearly pacing themselves to make it for the long haul. The weather has remained nice althought the wind has picked up some. The pledges now total over $39,000 and rising with each hole!

And volunteers help keep the course in good shape and clean for our golfers.

At just a few minutes after 7:00am today, 32 golfers (with one on injured reserve) headed out onto the golf course to begin the 2010 The First Tee of Fort Worth Golf Marathon Fundraiser!

The sign for the Ben Hogan Learning Center reminds us all what we are doing here before the sun comes up.

Executive Director Kevin Long provides a few brief instructions and a nice pep talk. He also reminds everyone not to spend too much time warming up as they do not want to tire out before noon!

United Community Centers Fundraiser

On Monday March 29 the United Community Centers held a fundraiser at Mira Vista Country Club. The UCC works with children through three centers locally. They invited The First Tee of Fort Worth to bring two groups to play in the tournament. Four students played with The First Tee Executive Director Kevin Long, two Board members Gail Friedman and William Scott, and Carlos Guzman the First Tee of Fort Worth Director of Marketing and Community Outreach. The first foursome included Kevin, Gail, Emily Matthews and Nick Narcisse while the second foursome included William, Carlos, Aaron Errico and Sara Posey. The tournament consisted of twenty teams and the weather made for a great day of golf! Aaron won a door prize which included four tickets to the Byron Nelson Golf Tournament.

The day was made more eventful for Kevin as he kept leaving his clubs on the course! Apparently, he does not normally use a cart and this was his explanation. Lynn Narcisse gratiously managed to save the day and rescue all of Kevin's clubs or he would have had to finish the round with just his putter!

The guest speaker following the tournament was former Dallas Cowboys running back, Robert Newhouse, who spoke about his own life and the need for youth development.

First Tournament of Spring!

The first 9-hole tournament of The First Tee of Fort Worth spring series was held March 15 at Sycamore Creek golf course.Thirty golfers, both girls and boys, in three different age brackets participated in this great event. Thanks go out to the wonderful staff at Sycamore Creek and the golf pro, Richard Garcia. Coach Phil Renteria, Coach Mike Maday along wth volunteer Rich Burns administered the event. The next tournament will be April 10 so make plans to attend!

Boys & Girls Clubs and Kathy Whitworth Invitational Golf Tournament

Mira Vista Country Club hosted the Boys and Girls Clubs and the Kathy Whitworth Invitation Golf Tournament March 14-16; the tournament invites outstanding young female golfers from around the United States to participate. On Thursday, March 11th LPGA Hall of Famer Kathy Whitworth, the staff at Mira Vista and the TCU Men's Golf Team held a clinic.

The First Tee of Fort Worth was invited to bring twenty-five golfers to participate. After the clinic, pizza, drinks and prizes were provided for the youngsters. The First Tee of Fort Worth volunteers also helped make this clinic a success for all of the kids including more than 150 from the local Boys and Girls Clubs.

The tournament's namesake and host, Kathy Whitworth, also met with and talked with the young golfers to offer her advice.

Executive Director attends The First Tee Conference

During the second week of March 2010, The First Tee of Fort Worth Executive Director Kevin Long attended the The First Tee Western United States Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. This week-long seminar included over 100 hundred representatives from chapters throughout the western half of the country; these directors networked and shared ideas and plans. The Home Office of The First Tee was also represented and provided helpful information for chapter development and growth. Kevin wanted everyone to know that the week was not all work, however, as he managed to play a little golf at The First Tee of Phoenix, too. Look at that lovely warm sunshine!

The First Tee of Fort Worth held their annual kick-off potluck dinner on February 27th with over 200 people in attendance. With the great food provided by all, fun and fellowship filled the evening. There were also several speakers who helped enlighten and encourage the audience. Lucas McNair from Hank Haney Golf spoke of perservering in one's goals if they are to be achieved and also how to make a career in golf beyond playing on tour. Mr. Claunch from Golfsmith spoke about making sure you have properly fitted clubs as well as remembering who you represent when you are on the golf course. Finally, The First Tee of Fort Worth Executive Director Kevin Long expounded on all of the virtues of The First Tee as well as the need to always remain positive and build friendships throughout life.

Kevin Long provided an update on the Ben Hogan Learning Center on which we hope to break ground this year.

Also Kevin described the history of the great artwork that can be seen in the interior photos. Artist Dan Dunn created the wonderful Ben Hogan painting that was sold at at auction for the Ben Hogan Henry House Foundation fundraiser and purchased by Rory and Amy Sabbatini; who then donated it back to The First Tee. As portrayed in the projected interior photos, the painting will eventually hang in the Ben Hogan Learning Center. Until the Center is competed, the painting is on display at Shady Oaks Country Club in a prominent location near Mr. Hogan's old locker. We think he would have enjoyed this version of his likeness!

North Texas Golf Expo

During the cold and snow of January, area golfers had the chance to try new equipment and test their swings at the annual North Texas Golf Exp sponsored by GolfDFW.com and the Golf Connection USA.
